My deplorable laptop

I’m typing this on a laptop I bought about five years ago, using free OpenOffice software in lieu of Microsoft Office. When I’m not at work, I use computers for writing documents, sending the occasional email, making budgets, and paying bills. My $50 Kindle Fire tablet is handier for consuming content like Twitter or porn.

My wife has an iPad that cost something like $900 and has $20 a month in “connectivity” fees. It’s nice, and my wife adores the thing, but I don’t know that it’s $850 (and $240 a year) nicer than my little Fire.

Someday this laptop will grind to a halt and I’ll get a new one. Like this one, I’ll probably buy it online for $300 or something. I don’t know anything about this laptop other than it’s a Compaq, and I’ll know about that much about my next one.

I have no desire for a new laptop or an iPad.

I am a deplorable consumer.
